Norman Australia - SmartPrivacy Venetians

Timber venetians make a timely return

Norman Australia is promoting the benefits of timber venetians, among them their status as a quality, affordable complement to other window treatments; particularly plantation shutters.

“Custom made timber blinds had their heyday in the 1990s a little while before shutters became popular. Timber blinds provided the flexibility that roller blinds couldn’t at the time. They could provide privacy and offered light control, whereas roller blinds were one-dimensional, either up or down.”

“The world moved on to shutters, giving consumers a huge amount of options in materials, frames and specifications. Has the time come to get back to something simple, cost effective, a money saver for consumers and an opportunity for retailers to protect and increase their margins?”

“At consumer level, shutters are a large investment to many homeowners, with whole house fit-outs of shutters running to many thousands of dollars. What many retailers can easily overlook is how well timber blinds complement shutters. If a house full of shutters is just too big an investment for a homeowner, rather than reducing prices and decreasing your margin, perhaps it is time to consider replacing some of the shutters on the proposal to timber blinds.”

“Timber blinds come in exact matching colours to shutters and seamlessly work with them to provide a great solution to suit most budgets.”

“The timber blinds of old used to only operate with cords, which we now know is a child strangulation hazard. Slats in the timber venetian blinds of the past used to move around if they had no holes punched for the cords, or if they had holes punched in the slats for the cords, they let in a lot of light and didn’t have great closure. Worse still was the big light gap between the top slat and the bottom of the headrail when the slats were closed, mostly clumsily hidden behind a valance.”

“Nowadays modern timber blinds come in a variety of operating systems including cordless, cord loop with the option of smart release (a one pull lowering feature) and motorised options. The modern materials are now either sustainably harvested timber or minimal VOC Fauxwoods and come in 50 and 63mm sized slats. It’s always best to check with your supplier as sustainability and VOC emissions have become major factors in a customer’s final decision.”

“The perennial issue of light leakage through slat holes has been overcome with clever design to eliminate holes, whilst stopping the slats from moving side to side. The newer designed timber venetian blinds now have ingenious operating systems to eliminate the unsightly gap at the top when the slats are close, with the top slat nestling into purposely designed channels to eliminate light leakage.’

“In summary, timber venetians have come a long way since the ‘90s and it might just be time to revisit them as a way to increase sales and protect or increase margins.”

“Norman Australia’s SmartPrivacy Blinds offer patented features and have taken out well earned design awards, as part of our unique range of affordable window treatments.”
