Reskinning: new life for awnings

ISSUE 71 March 2020

Dickson is promoting the benefits of “reskinning” as an economical and effective way to give awnings and properties a new lease of life.

“Changing the awning fabric is an easy and effective way to boost exteriors, protect a building from UV rays and even reduce energy consumption,” says Yann Simon, Sales Manager at Dickson.

“Reskinning is a quick and inexpensive technique. It consists only in changing the fabric of the awning without modifying the structure. In short, reskinning changes everything, without changing anything.”

FAST, ECONOMICAL AND SUSTAINABLE

“Reskinning takes less than two hours including adjustments to give a fresh look to your awning,” says Simon. “The installer takes the measurements of the awning and helps the client to select a new fabric design during the first meeting. The second visit consists in removing the old defective or outdated fabric to replace it with a brand new one. That’s all. There is no need to replace the awning hardware, or even to dismantle the unit entirely.”

“In addition to its rapid execution, reskinning is economical. You benefit from the advantages of a new awning without buying a new one since it only replaces the fabric. On average, the re-cover is equivalent to only a quarter of the price of a new awning. For the same reasons, it is also ecological since it saves the resources necessary for the production of a new blind: you only replace what needs to be replaced.”

Typically the first choice for a reskinning is a solution-dyed acrylic fabric, he says. This will provide better thermal protection against the sun’s rays to lower temperatures in summer, reduce the need for air conditioning (and therefore lower energy costs), and protect effectively from UV rays while being very lightweight.

A reskinning with a Dickson acrylic fabric brings a value-add to a large array of buildings both in residential and commercial spaces, he adds.

“Often used to create the identity of a place, the awning fabric is one of the first features to be visible on a facade. It reinforces the brand image of a business and fosters customer experience with excellent weather protection all year round. With an average cost of a quarter of the initial awning, reskinning is a smart choice. Dickson fabrics filter more than 90% of the UV A, B and C which is in line with the Skin Cancer Foundation recommendations. For customers, sheltered exteriors become a place of true relaxation and sharing, regardless of the weather. Restaurants and cafes benefit consequently from a noticeable increase in traffic and revenue throughout the year.”
