OBITUARY: ROSS LAVA

ISSUE 67 JULY 2019

Family, friends and industry colleagues have farewelled Ross Lava, proprietor of Vertilux Corporation, who died unexpectedly on 14 May 2019 at the age of 63.

From his position at the helm of one of the window furnishings sector’s most established companies, founded in 1976, Lava built a reputation as a liked and respected industry identity. Under his leadership, Vertilux became highly regarded for its commitment to quality product and consistent service. Innovation was a keystone of the company, exemplified by such advances as the spring assist system and multilink system, the latter regarded as an industry first when it launched in 2005.

The two systems were later combined, creating another industry first.

Another key point of difference considered a critical by Lava was the company’s commitment to Australian made, with a state of the art factory located in Melbourne enduringly committed to employing local talent. Vertilux also gained a reputation as a trailblazer for its early adoption of environmental practices.

Family was central to Lava’s life, in particular his immediate family: wife Joanne, eldest son Aaron, middle son Joel and youngest soon Reece, Speaking at the funeral, Aaron Lava commented:

“You loved your business and you loved to work. That played a big part in your life until your last day. If there’s one thing that you taught us three boys, it was good work ethics, because when all the other kids were enjoying their school holidays or weekends, we were dragged to the factory to work.”

He indicated the full span of Ross Lava’s achievements over the course of his career, commenting that Lava’s first factory making vertical blinds was “a far cry” from the powerhouse of what the Vertilux business is today.

“Dad you will be truly missed. Your generosity and kind heartedness touched many and your legacy will live on for many more years.”
