Imagination: a pathway to wellbeing, creativity and innovation

Issue 87 November 2022

A new team building exercise for corporates focuses on imagination as research confirms that imagination has a positive impact on wellbeing and business outcomes. The idea for Imagination Session came to Dawn Adams, a former Boston Publishing journalist, when she rediscovered her imagination in lockdowns.

“I’d sit at the computer, tap out a story and have grand adventures, all in my mind,” she said. “And then, I’d return to this locked-down world refreshed.”

This positive wellbeing impact convinced her that imagination was worthwhile sharing. But it was only after extensive research, that she learnt something unexpected, that there are so many positive business outcomes that can be achieved when imagination is prioritised.

Kantar’s Insight 2030 report found companies with a primary focus on imagination over-performed compared to their rivals. And McKinsey research identifies creativity, analysis and purpose as a ‘growth triple play’. Used together, it claims these strategies can deliver a business twice the growth of their peers.

“It’s extraordinary that tapping into a uniquely human skill like imagination has such widespread benefits,” Adams said. “When I started Imagination Session®, all I wanted was to make people feel a little more happy, a greater sense of joy. But now, I see its power, that imagination is how we shape and change our world.”

In an Imagination Session, Adams facilitates an imaginative journey where you drive the action, you decide what happens next. In this collective imagination exercise, professional skills are also developed such as collaboration, critical thinking and an ability to rethink, reshape and reinvent ‘traditional’ ways of doing things. Also, to grow confidence to share ideas within, and across, teams while gaining an appreciation that imagination is one step closer to creativity and innovation.

“With the joy of imagining core to these sessions, participants tell me they touch freedom while we imagine, they discover contemplative moments even in the midst of our laughter, that they enjoy stepping away from their logical brains and into their creative brains,” Adams said.
