Issue 95 March 2024

Hunter Douglas has appointed Steve Saboune as its new Australian Managing Director – Residential. Steve Saboune brings over two decades of leadership to the role, while journey into the window furnishings sector began in early 2021, through the acquisition and consolidation of several independent businesses into Curtain Hardware Australia, which was later acquired by Hunter Douglas in 2023.

Reflecting on his appointment, Saboune commented: “Following 20 plus years of leadership experience, I found my way into the industry via acquiring a few fantastic independent businesses. Hunter Douglas acquired Curtain Hardware Australia in 2023, marking a significant milestone in my career.”

As the new steward of the company, Saboune is poised to drive Hunter Douglas’ strategy of growth through innovation and education, not only in product development but also in market communication and stakeholder interaction.

On the celebration of Luxaflex’s 70th anniversary, he said, “I am excited by the challenge of growing the market through ongoing innovation and education. My team and I have the job to build on this and ensure the Luxaflex brand continues to be loved and trusted by consumers for another 70 years.”

Addressing current trends, Saboune highlighted increasing consumer demand for smart and automated solutions, as well as the popularity of soft furnishings.

“One significant trend is the growing demand for smart and automated solutions,” he said, emphasising Hunter Douglas’ commitment to innovation in automation and soft furnishings to meet evolving market needs.

However, the journey ahead is not without its challenges. Saboune said the economic headwinds expected in 2024 could hinder consumer discretionary spending.

Despite these obstacles, his outlook remains optimistic. “Economic headwinds will continue to prove challenging in 2024,” he said, “but our perspective remains focused on the long-term trajectory.”

At the heart of Saboune’s leadership philosophy is a deep-seated motivation to foster growth and success within his team.

“I thrive on helping others grow and be successful,” he said,

Saboune added that his vision for Hunter Douglas in Australia is clear: to innovate, educate, and grow the market, ensuring Hunter Douglas remains at the forefront of the window furnishings industry for decades to come.

“If I can empower every member of the team to contribute to the growth and success of Hunter Douglas, then all our stakeholders benefit in the long run.”
