Green shoots: industry training snapshot

ISSUE 72 May 2020

In an overall market where training and apprenticeships are often de-prioritised, the window furnishings industry is reporting clear evidence of positive change.

The Frontline Group, which manages training for the window furnishings industry on the behalf of the BMAA, has confirmed that Certificate III is now being delivered in NSW, while the development of Cert II Manufacturing is underway.

Significantly, while apprenticeships are dropping nationally across the board, uptake remains strong in the window furnishings sector. Age and gender are interesting factors in the uptake too, with 80% of apprentices in the blind industry over 35 and 38% female (highest of all industries). To date there have been 148 apprentices with total training plans and an 81%retention rate. NSW is the largest region, with 29% of establishments registered in the state. And there have now been 828 completions in Victoria and Queensland.

Key training highlights to date include:

  • July 2018-April 2019: Leadership program and graduation.
  • February 2019: Queensland traineeship program commenced.
  • December 2019: Eight fully qualified Certificate III apprentices.
  • November 2019-January 2020: Installation safety program.
  • January 2020: Development of micro- credentials/skill sets (security, installation).
  • February 2020: Curtains manufacturing and installation stream.
