ACCC PUTS CORDED SAFETY STANDARD REVIEW ON HOLD

ISSUE 73 July 2020

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has put its review into Trade Practices (Consumer Product Safety Standard – Corded
Internal Window Coverings) Regulations 2010 on hold due to a change in priorities.

In February 2019, the ACCC advised that it was reviewing the mandatory safety standard for Corded Internal Window Coverings. Submissions were made by a number of suppliers of corded and non-corded products as well as the Blind Manufacturers Association (BMAA).

This was the first review of the safety standard since its introduction in 2010. The purpose of the review was to assess whether the safety standard has been effective and was looking at market, regulatory and non regulatory developments both in Australian and overseas.

Despite the large response from industry, the ACCC announced in February that it has prioritised other work due to resourcing constraints and the need to reallocate resources to other programs including the mandatory recall of Takata airbags.

The ACCC said in a letter to the BMAA that when it is in a position to recommence the review and where a proposed instrument is materially different from the current standard, they will contact all relevant stakeholders, including the BMAA, to seek their views on this proposal prior to making a final recommendation.
