Vertical systems continue to evolve in line with evolving customer demand, pointing to the category’s continued staying power. WFA reports.

Louvolite

Louvolite Technical Sales Manager David Kennedy provides a potted history of the company’s iconic verticals offering.

“Some five decades or so ago an ambitious and intelligent man ventured across to Australia with a great product and some high hopes. His name was Reginald Allsopp, his company was Louvolite and that great product was the Louvolite Slimline vertical blind system.

“Fortunately, as he had hoped, a number of forward thinking Australian blind making companies  immediately saw the features and benefits of  the Slimline programme and the relationship between the company and the Australian blind industry began.

“In those fledgling times, the Slimline product was available with dedicated features; louvres were 5” or 127mm, whichever currency you choose to use. The Slimline headrail was not available in an expansive range of colours, but that was the flavour of the day. In those days, the typical way of installing the larger bodied systems was for the installer to drill through the headrail and screw directly into the lintel.

“The Louvolite Slimline vertical system had face fix brackets, soon to be followed by top fix brackets.”

The intrepid Allsopp had a programme that was “totally fit for purpose, visually very neat and compact and yet robust and capable of meeting the stringent performance requirements that Australian customers demanded,” says Kennedy.

Fast forward 50 years and the Louvolite Slimline system has morphed into the Louvolite Slimline Vogue system.

Louvolite

“The straight up and down design seen for Slimline vertical extrusion has become softer, more organic and  better styled to satisfy consumer demand. It comes in a host of colours, the carrier truck bodies are moulded using materials which are self-lubricating and quieter to operate than typical wheeled carriers,  available in a number of colours to co-ordinate or contrast with the headrail colour selected.

“The carriers are now available in a variety of lengths to suit the fabric widths available but the one thing we haven’t changed is the fact that the spacer links are manufactured from stainless steel, the strongest material available for this product.

“Combining this functionality with the option to have either cord and chain operation or  mono command, also known as wand control, this makes the Louvolite vertical system a must have for any manufacturer.

“Combine all of the above with a 10 year cycle test, you have a leading vertical system fit for  the market of today.

“So, the very first product that Louvolite produced in 1971 has evolved into a programme that fully satisfies the demands of the market, and of course those demands change. The recently launched Allusion programme of fabrics from Louvolite combines beautifully with our stylish Slimline Vogue headrail programme and adds panache and style to any window dressing.”

Norman Marketing Coordinator Giorgia English tells WFA the company’s SmartDrape line combines the elegance of curtains with the practicality of vertical blinds, “making it an ideal choice for any modern home.”

“Our latest update to the SmartDrape program features new room darkening fabrics, enhancing the versatility and functionality of this innovative product.”

The new room darkening fabrics in the SmartDrape range offer more choices for customers looking for enhanced light control, and darkness when needed, she adds.

“This range of fabrics is perfect for bedrooms where light management is crucial. SmartDrape’s individual vanes allow for easy adjustment, enabling users to switch between light filtering and room darkening effortlessly.”

“SmartDrape also addresses a specific market gap by offering a solution that combines the appeal of two curtains in one functional and beautiful drape. This product is designed for consumers who want stylish window coverings that provide excellent light control and privacy options. The addition of room darkening fabrics makes SmartDrape even more versatile, catering to a broader range of customers.”

English notes that the current market for vertical blind systems is increasingly focused on products that deliver both style and functionality.

“There is a growing demand for window coverings that can seamlessly blend with modern home décor while offering practical benefits such as light control and privacy. SmartDrape stands out in this market by providing an elegant, versatile solution that meets these demands, making it a popular choice.”

In the realm of outdoor comfort and architectural innovation, vertical systems play a pivotal role in transforming spaces and enhancing lifestyles, Dalekit general manager Joanne de Silva tells WFA.

“From the humble beginnings of the Verandah Straight Drop to the cutting-edge solutions available today, Dalekit has been at the forefront of this evolution, offering a comprehensive range of vertical systems designed to meet the diverse needs of modern living.”

“Dalekit’s journey in the vertical systems market began with the traditional Verandah Straight Drop, characterised by timber tops, tube bottoms, and ropes and pulleys with leather straps. However, the landscape has undergone significant transformations since then, with Dalekit now offering an impressive array of nine different vertical systems, including innovative designs that can run vertically upwards. This commitment to innovation and diversity underscores Dalekit’s dedication to providing solutions that cater to evolving tastes and preferences.”

De Silva confirms that in response to the shifting demands of the market, Dalekit has expanded its vertical systems offering to encompass a wide range of options beyond the traditional Verandah Straight Drop.

Rollease Acmeda

Product Manager Shaila Figueiredo tells WFA the company has been focusing on a number of considered enhancements to its verticals range.

“Vertical systems have been around for a long time, but with legacy designs and off the shelf components the efficiency of the system had yet to keep up with modern needs. We saw an opportunity for improvements and by focusing on reliability and ease of manufacturing, a series of enhancements were made.

Rollease Acmeda

“The introduction of redesigned tiltrod support and wand control units, simplified end caps, a clever Carrier Anchor and a streamlining of inventory were essential steps to achieve our goal. These enhancements, along with helpful tools like the Tiltrod Support Template, Link Chart Generator and manufacturing support documentation were all necessary contributors for faster assembly.

Nathaniel Robson, Regional Sales Manager for Queensland and North NSW, confirms his customers are pleased with the changes. “The new system is easier to install and works every time. My customers appreciate the improvements.”

Figueiredo concludes that, with adjustments to the range and considering market sentiment, the outlook for verticals remains positive. “Vertical systems continue as favored shades in rental and commercial settings for their intuitive operation and adjustable control of light and privacy. The expectation is that this product category will maintain its relevance and appeal in the market for some time.”

BM Blinds

“The vertical of today is the vertical re-imagined” says Michael Shaw, Director of BM Blinds.

“For new homeowners, gone are days of running out to match the blackout, heavy textured, vertical blinds that their relatives have been using for decades. The individual panels moving and hitting each other each time the window is opening making nothing but noise. With the functionality of roller blinds, venetians and shutters not being quite as versatile, we have seen a decrease in the purchase of these market originals.

“Instead, we now have “vertical sheers” that have become an on-trend window covering, a go-to for this generation’s homeowners and interior designers.”

Chantelle Todd from BM Blinds adds: “Prior to working with BM Blinds, I did not know what a vertical blind was, yet alone the endless options. As a person of this generation, we find that the use of technology has a key influence of what is on trend and demand for vertical sheers is huge.”

Shaw concludes: “The soft fabric combination of sheer and opaque/blackout fabric with a range of textures and mounting styles have introduced a new meaning to complete versatility. Whether the purpose of the vertical sheer is to cover a window or butting wall to wall, there is a range and solution to suit everyone’s homes and businesses; a modern take on the standard vertical blind.”

“Introducing 17 ranges, BM Blinds offers one of the largest lines of vertical sheer fabrics in the Australian Market and is looking forward to seeing this product category continue to grow with new launches such as Lume Obscura.”

Silent Gliss

Silent Gliss by Peter Meyer stands at the forefront of window treatment innovation, offering an exquisite range of motorised, cord-operated, and crank-operated Vertical Blind systems, says Simon Meyer – Managing Director Silent Gliss by Peter Meyer.

“These systems are designed to elevate living spaces with their combination of artistic ingenuity and functional excellence.

“Silent Gliss Vertical Blinds are available in motorised, cord-operated, and crank-operated systems, each providing seamless operation and precise adjustments. Whether you prefer the convenience of motorisation or the tactile engagement of manual control, Silent Gliss guarantees effortless operation.

“The chain-operated Vertical Blind system is particularly notable for its flexibility, allowing for horizontal bending with a small radius of 74cm. This makes it ideal for spaces with unconventional architectural elements. The mono-operation using a ball chain enables smooth opening, closing, and tilting of the Blinds, while a chain override feature adds an extra layer of protection.

“For spaces with sloping roofs, the crank-operated Vertical Blind system is a reliable solution. It features a robust and bendable profile that can accommodate roof angles of up to 53 degrees. With a slender bending radius of 50 cm and a hand crank mechanism, this system offers continuous control over the blinds. The gear drive with override protection ensures smooth functionality and durability.

“The motorised Vertical Blinds system brings technological sophistication to window treatments. Suitable for sloped roofs, this system allows for effortless control with the push of a button. The integration of motorisation makes opening, closing, and tilting of the blinds seamless, and the gear override mechanism safeguards against potential damage.

“Silent Gliss goes beyond functionality to embrace artistic expression, collaborating with European textile designers to create a stunning evolution in laser-cut blind systems. Through innovative printing methods and a thoughtful selection of colour palettes, Silent Gliss has crafted a remarkable range of Vertical Blinds with a breathtaking 3D appearance.

The Vertical Waves collection is the pinnacle of ambitious design, featuring three distinct designs: Andrea, Annika, and Maria, which can truly transform a space.

The Andrea design creates a captivating interplay between light and shape. With a 3D profile, it adds a new dimension, unveiling different effects from every angle.

The Annika features the Grand and Jagged Wave Formation. It breaks up the light in a way that produces a distinctive and enchanting lighting experience.

The Maria design is influenced by a soft, flowing wave with a calm and soothing aesthetic, further enhanced by the choice of blade colour.

“These designs showcase the perfect blend of artistic innovation and practical functionality, making them standout pieces in any interior setting. The Vertical Waves collection is available exclusively via indent from Blinds by Peter Meyer, ensuring a personalised experience and exceptional attention to detail.

“Silent Gliss Vertical Blinds are designed to fill a gap in the market for high-quality, aesthetically innovative window treatments. While many Vertical Blinds focus solely on functionality, Silent Gliss elevates the standard by combining advanced technology with unique, artistic designs. This makes them the perfect solution for customers who seek not only functional window coverings but also transformative pieces of interior decor that reflect personal style and sophistication.”

Meyer says the Vertical Blinds market in Australia is evolving with increasing demand for versatile and customisable solutions.

“Despite the economic challenges, including slower GDP growth and inflationary pressures, the demand for high-quality home improvement products remains strong. The work-from-home trend has significantly boosted sales in the window treatment sector as homeowners invest in creating functional and aesthetically pleasing home offices and living spaces. The Vertical Blinds market is expected to grow annually by about 4% from 2024 to 2031, reflecting the sustained interest in quality window treatments.”

“The Australian economy is experiencing slower growth and inflation-induced challenges. However, the demand for home improvement products, including Vertical Blinds, remains resilient. Consumers are cautious with their spending, but they continue to invest in high-quality, durable products that offer long-term value. Silent Gliss Vertical Blinds, with their combination of functionality and artistic design, are well-positioned to meet this demand.”
