SHEER DRAPERY REPORT

ISSUE 69 NOVEMBER 2019

With designer and consumer trends leaning more and more towards natural, low key finishes, the subtle variations offered by the sheers market continue to unfold. Belinda Smart reports.

JAMES DUNLOP TEXTILES
The Complexity collection from James Dunlop Textiles is inspired from the timeless combination of black and white. Within this collection James Dunlop has launched two new sheer designs,

Aligned and Exposure. Both draw influence from photography techniques, redefining and reinterpreting them into weave.

Aligned: This is a gently graduated woven stripe. Aligned creates movement from light to dark on a semi-transparent linen base cloth.

Exposure: Inspired by the idea of photography transformed into weave, Exposure uses a jacquard construction to reinterpret the play of reflection using the drama of black and white yarn.

Both designs are 300cm wide and designed to target the residential market, incorporating a high component of natural fibre into the weave.

WARWICK
Cameron Warwick, Joint Managing Director, confirms the latest releases in the sheer drapery category include the Elevate Collection, described as “a one-stop-shop of over 150 options (15 qualities) of our bestselling sheers.”

The range offers a compilation of different finishes and textures to meet every need, with all fabrics commercially rated and tested.

Meanwhile the Miranda collection offers a comprehensive range textural looks for drapery “Miranda offers three designs digitally printed on three popular base cloths including sheers, dim out and block out options (Paros, Fun, and Belmore).”

“Designs are organic and subtle, perfect for introducing pattern into drapery, for example, organic chevron, bark like texture, classic crosshatch.”

The range features five easy to use colour palettes. With all fabrics commercially rated and tested, Miranda is positioned as a versatile collection that can be used for residential and commercial spaces.

Viron and Polaris are two luxurious natural blend jacquard drapery products featuring organic nature inspired patterns that are lustrous and elegant. “These are perfect products for luxe voluminous drapes. The colour palettes are rich but inspired by nature, meaning they can be introduced into interiors with ease.”

Mythos and Phoenix are two elegant scrim-like textures with lustrous yarns and a contemporary style. Both self-weighted, continuous and 300cm + wide, they are described as “the perfect choice for large architectural window treatments.”

Colours are commercial neutrals with a subtle hint of colour. Creating a beautiful filtered light, the fabrics are commercially rated and tested.

Adler is a 320 cm wide, selfweighted Polyester, cotton and bamboo blend resulting in a “soft, light and ethereal” sheer fabric, featuring a subtle fine pinstripe weave for sophisticated timeless style.

“Rather than overly decorative drapery, the style is more pared back and timeless. Textures are extremely popular, from linen looks to scrims and chunky sheers. Texture is where it is at. There is also more interest in lustrous yarns like viscose, bamboo and soft polyesters. Layering is also a trend that we see again and again, with people layering sheers, romans and opaque drapes together for added volume and interest. In patterns the trend is subtle, tone on tone and inspired by nature and geographical formations such as sand dunes, shadows or tree bark.

“With large architectural builds becoming more popular, we have definitely seen a rise in requests for longer drops in drapery products. We now have a great range of products that cover this area with widths of 300cm-320cm. We believe that this demand will continue to grow, and we are working hard with our suppliers to supply more product at wider widths; our mills are investing in machinery that can produce wider widths.”

“Drapes like Jardin capture the look and feel of Turkish sheers. Jardin features a beautiful drape and soft weighted hems to allow flow of movement, especially when paired with the popular wave track system.”

“The fabrics are available in a range of sizes and lengths, to accommodate for the longer drops and wider widths that are currently popular, especially in modern luxury apartments which often feature floor-to-ceiling windows. As building technology continues to develop and apartments become more and more popular, we expect to see a growing demand for large-scale drapery.”
