Interior sunscreen fabrics are leveraging the forward trends for 2020 while continuing to maintain their performance edge, writes Belinda Smart.
The Shann Group
“For more than a decade, The Shann Group have been providing our customers with the premier range of internal screen fabrics,” says Melissa Vine, Shann Group National Product Manager, Industrial Fabrics. “N-Vision and S-View lead the market for their performance, durability, ease of use and colour palette. Their constant evolution has ensured they remain the market leader, taking on new features, launching new colours, and adapting to design trends. Looking ahead to 2020, this is no different.”
Vine says in terms of colour palette, black and white are set for a design re-emergence in 2020. “The new Ice White colour just introduced in the N-Vision range works perfectly with this theme. Ice White is our whitest white yet with even better UV stability and, when coupled with the ever-popular N-Vision Black, ensures our customers can deliver this bold, on trend window treatment to their customers.”
She adds that the new Ice White hue is a perfect complement to Pantone’s recently announced Colour of the Year for 2020 – Classic Blue. “This deep, rich tone sits beautifully with Ice White, creating the relaxed, cool tones of the contemporary, coastal Hamptons theme.”
“Layering natural textures with warm, earth colours is also set to transform interiors into the new year and the neutrals, beiges and buffs in the Shann screen palette help to bring the natural, organic theme to life,” she says. “Beauty is also about performance and N-Vision and S-View continue to offer performance benefits that guarantee a long in-service life. Backed by a 10-year warranty, N-Vision and S-View offer better aesthetics, less shrinkage, greater tensile strength and superior tear strength. Additionally, they are eco-focussed, boasting Greenguard, Oeko-Tex and REACH regulation certifications.”
“As always, our focus into 2020 will be ensuring we have the right product to suit our customers’ requirements and the environment, and backing that up with the required performance characteristics.”

Hunter Douglas
High performance technical fabrics continue to be in demand across residential and commercial applications, offering superior solar protection and aiding energy efficiency, says Kim Henretty, Brand Manager for Hunter Douglas. “The Mermet Performance Sunscreens available from Hunter Douglas go that step further, featuring built-in intelligence to put them at the forefront of screen technology.”
“Fibreglass yarns have been an important part of the Mermet interior screen ranges for many years and over time we’ve seen the market focus shift away from polyester, seeking the strength and reliability of fibreglass.”
“The E-Screen and M-Screen internal ranges, and the new Stance Fibreglass External Sunscreen all feature Enduris fibreglass core. The yarn is specially woven to maintain a high view-through ability, without compromising on UV protection, an absolute essential for the Australian climate.”
Across the ranges are a variety of specially engineered and architecturally-designed features, building in even more ‘smarts’ to screens. “The metalised backing of E-Screen Chrome fabric improves energy savings through the maximum reflection of solar energy, while the tighter weave at 3% openness provides enhanced glare control. For maximum performance in darker colours E-Screen with Koolblack Technology increases the energy efficiency of dark solar shade fabrics to levels comparable with light colours.”
The complete collection of Enduris fibreglass core screens, including the new Stance Fibreglass External Sunscreen, have been tested and are Greenguard Gold Certified to meet strict certification criteria for low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions, resulting in high suitability for use in environments such as schools and healthcare facilities (IEQ-11).
Shaw
Shaw National Sales Manager Mark Lewis confirms Shaw has a comprehensive screen offering from entry level price point to non PVC fire retardant commercial solutions.
“We believe the screen sector remains an integral part of window furnishing industry. The end customer is becoming more astute about colour selection and interior trends, with a growing awareness of performance and functionality for each individual window. Their purchasing decision is based on a combination of view, shading performance, durability, and the right price point.”
“Shaw’s screen range aims to be price conscious but not to the detriment of wellbeing attributes like VOC emissions,” he says. Lewis adds that the latest addition to Shaw’s screen family is Enviro Vision, a non-PES screen targeting the project and commercial market.
In addition the Shaw range catering to the screen category includes established products such as Duo Screen, described as an entry level fabric featuring an on-trend colour palette. This price competitive fabric carries Greenguard Gold accreditation SW4500 Eco FR – 3% 5% 10% and can be colour coordinated with Icon FR 3.2m blockout. Key features and benefits include the use of bio-based plasticiser, meaning no PVC odour. The fabric is also intrinsically treated with Microban which remains effective for the lifetime of the fabric.
