Recessed, curved and correctly costed: the new curtain tracking brief

Issue 109 July 2026

Recessed ceiling details and wave headings have pushed curtain tracking from hardware afterthought to precision specification. Two new releases to the Australian market address both ends of the brief: the track that has to disappear into the architecture, and the quoting tool that has to price it right first time.

THE SPECIFICATION PROBLEM

An architect marks a recess on a ceiling plan and assumes the detail works. What the drawing rarely accounts for is the motor assembly at the end of a motorised curtain track, which has historically forced installers to open up the ceiling cut-out beyond the specified line, or reach for a plastic corner piece that breaks the curve.

That compromise sits at the root of why curtain tracking has become a more exacting category. Wave and ripplefold headings need consistent glider pitch to hold their stack across the full width of an opening, which tightens the tolerance on every component on the track. Motorisation, once a premium add-on, now arrives as a default expectation on mid and upper-tier residential and commercial work, so the hardware driving the curtain has to sit inside an architectural detail that was designed before anyone thought about where the drive unit goes.

The back-office consequence follows the same logic. A curtain track order that once listed a length and a colour now carries a motor option, a remote or hub, bend specifications for any curved run, finish selection and the correct gliders for the heading type. Getting that bill of materials right at quote stage matters, because an error in the pricing of a track assembly does not correct itself on site.

The two systems covered here address both sides of that problem: hardware built for recessed and curved detailing, and the quoting software that costs it.

MEYER BLINDS: CLOSING THE GAP IN RECESSED CURTAIN SYSTEMS

Meyer Blinds has introduced two recessed curtain track systems to close gaps encountered repeatedly in existing solutions: one for motorised applications, one for hand-operated work requiring the same architectural finish.

As demand for recessed curtain systems continues to grow across residential and commercial projects, architects, designers and installers are increasingly seeking solutions that deliver both architectural precision and long-term practicality.

According to Simon Meyer, Managing Director of Meyer Blinds, this growing demand exposed several limitations within existing recessed curtain track systems.

“We were seeing the same challenges repeatedly: oversized ceiling cut-outs around motor ends, limited bending capability, servicing difficulties and recess solutions that felt like adaptations rather than purpose-designed systems,” says Meyer.

To address these issues, Meyer Blinds has introduced two new exclusive curtain track solutions: the PureGlyde recessed curtain track system and the Silent Gliss SG6870 with matching recess profile.

Developed exclusively by Meyer Blinds, PureGlyde is a purpose-built recessed curtain system designed for motorised applications. Combining Somfy Glydea Ultra, Movelite and Zigbee motor options with a custom aluminium recess profile and engineered componentry, the system has been designed from the ground up specifically for recessed installations.

Unlike traditional recessed solutions that require oversized or rounded ceiling cut-outs to accommodate motor assemblies, PureGlyde enables a clean, straight wall-to-wall recess detail. The system also incorporates removable wedge fixings for easier installation and future access, while simultaneously bent track and recess profiles allow continuous curves or fixed radius bends without plastic corner pieces.

“PureGlyde fills a clear gap in the market,” says Meyer. “It delivers architectural precision, serviceability and installation efficiency within a single integrated system rather than asking installers to work around the limitations of standard components.”

The second release, the Silent Gliss SG6870, brings the same architectural aesthetic to hand-operated applications. Developed as the square-profile version of the popular SG6840, the medium-duty system features a coordinated square-profile track and matching recess profile solution for both straight and curved installations. The SG6870 track can be bent to a 260mm radius, while the matching recess profile is available for curved applications from a 500mm radius. Supporting standard and wave headings, available in natural anodised, white powdercoat and matte black finishes, and incorporating proven Silent Gliss 2C Glider technology, SG6870 delivers a refined architectural solution for projects where motorisation is not required.

For retailers and specifiers, the key selling points are clear: cleaner recess detailing, improved installation outcomes, enhanced serviceability, continuous curved applications, premium architectural finishes and greater flexibility across both motorised and hand-operated projects.

“The curtain track market has become increasingly design-driven,” says Meyer. “Customers are no longer just selecting a track. They’re specifying how that track integrates into the architecture of the building. These systems have been developed to meet those expectations.”

BLIND.EXPERT: GETTING ON TRACK WITH THE QUOTE

Blind.Expert approaches the specification problem from the quoting side: Excel-based software that produces a bill of materials, component costings and purchase orders from a single curtain job entry.

Blind.Expert launched its uniquely positioned Microsoft Excel-based solutions for window covering retailers and manufacturers at SuperExpo 2026. One of the core products available through their subscription model, starting at just A$59.95 per month, is a curtain bill-of-materials calculator and quote tool that provides much needed functionality for companies involved in the sale and/or manufacture of curtains.

Business operator Grant Norton says the tool saves many hours of work to create accurate and highly flexible curtain costings and quotes. Norton says: “Users can easily load for themselves any number of different tracking systems, including hand operated and motorised, plus remotes, hubs and other motorised accessories. Being Excel based, it is very easy to provide users with tables that can be populated with data, including cost prices for each track length. When the user configures an order, the appropriate track appears in the dropdown list to match the curtain type and fixing etc. Weight calculations are performed to ensure [the] curtain fabric weight does not exceed the manufacturer’s recommendations, plus the maximum length is also checked and reported if exceeded. Finally, the order sheet presents the user with all available track colours, again easily set up in the background tables.”

The system also allows users to specify and cost angle bends and continuous bends, based upon track level costing parameters. Up to 4x angle bends can be added to a single track.

After the quote is created, a comprehensive bill of manufacture is produced for the entire job, which gives the users all they need to know about total purchase or production requirements for the entire job. Finally, and if required by the user, customised POs are generated to place their orders with the track suppliers, plus fabric suppliers and others.

All quotes and PO docs include the user’s logo and business details, entered once in a master page that feeds that info to all other customer-facing documents.

Norton continued: “Unlike most web-based solutions, our workbook actually starts at the Bill-of-Materials and calculates a complete cost-up calculation of all the inputs, including actual fabric usage, list of tracks, components and labour required to make a curtain job. Those background calculations allow us to then produce accurate lists of all raw material usages and even raise the POs for these items, like fabrics and tracks.”

“As part of the cost generation process, we also create cost grids and associated Retail/Wholesale price grids that the user can give to salespersons or dealers etc.”

Norton said: “One of our most exciting recent developments for this workbook is the addition of our XeroPush function, which allows curtain quotes to be pushed directly into Xero as either Draft Quotes or Draft Invoices. This will save many hours of double handling and reduce keying errors for all Xero users.

“We are now working an MYOB version of the same, which I hope we can release by time this magazine edition hits the streets!”

“We received a very positive response to our unique applications at SuperExpo 2026, and I am hoping we can see significant local and international support for these unique and valuable tools,” Norton said in close. Visit the website at www.blind.expert.
