POWERFUL CONNECTIONS

ISSUE 68 SEPTEMBER 2019

The motorisation + automation market continues to evolve at a rapid pace, and with Australian endusers actively embracing the concept of the ‘connected home’ and IoT, it shows no sign of slowing down. Belinda Smart spoke to motorisation specialists across the board about their latest releases.

DYNAVEIL
Alex Liu, owner of Melbourne company Dynaveil, confirms the launch of a new roller blind motor to market in September after an in-depth research and development phase.

“We completely separate product groups between residential and commercial as we believe the installation and application are very different. For commercial, we will provide final product solutions for motorisation, rather than supply motors only. For residential, we are going to supply motors to the trade. We categorise the trade into four segments: wholesalers, manufacturers, larger retailers and small retailers mainly because they will buy at different volumes.”

Liu predicts the motorisation market is set to grow significantly due to three key factors:

  • Regulations are already in places in North America (USA and Canada) to ban loop chain drives for window furnishing products. We have been communicating with both federal and state levels of politicians in regard to the safety hazards associated with loop chain drives.
  • Affordable products for motorisation will become available once we release our latest development. Consumers now can enjoy automation at the same cost of manually operation in commercial applications and no more than $60-$100 extra per unit for motorised options when purchasing roller blinds for residential applications.
  • One of the constraints in pushing motorisation to market is that trades in general are not qualified in handling the technical issues after sales and charge a premium in case things go wrong. We are considering taking over all responsibility for after sales issues so that the trade will have freedom to just sell and install without the hassle of “technical issues” after sales.

A-OK / ICLSA
“A-OK Australia [ICLSA] is keen to show leadership in this rapidly developing segment of the automation market, but regardless of our current position, it is something all major brands are acutely aware of and we are all developing and releasing product to cater for consumer interest and demand almost continuously,” says ICLSA Managing Director Peter Monkhouse.

Already on the market long enough to prove reliability and functionality is the AC520-01 Smart Home Hub, which allows an A-OK device to operate from a phone or voice command module such as Google Home. Also coming into the range is the AC521-01 Mini Hub, which is a “Zigbee” signal device and allows faster, simpler connection to home automation and voice activation.

“At the Super Expo 2019 in June, we released the AM43 Blind Drive unit, which is operated through a phone app (available on Google and Apple) and this allows conversion of your existing or new, cord operated interior blind, curtain or venetian via Bluetooth. The app shows the current position of the blind and the operator can then take the blind up or down.”

Interest in and demand for home automation is growing exponentially, particularly with the younger generation and first home owners, Monkhouse says.

“More and more items within the home and office are becoming controllable through either voice activation, app, computer command or a combination of all of the above. A-OK now produces multi-channel remotes that can operate blinds, air-conditioning, lights and clothes drying racks in response to consumer demand.”

“Australia has one of the highest uptakes of smart phone/smart home technology in the world and this is not about to diminish. Within the blind and awning industry, I see our biggest issue as being able to keep up with the rapidly changing technology. To illustrate that, one only needs to look at the early releases of programs to control blinds via a mobile through a smart-hub/ modem. As apps are frequently updated, each time that happened, it often resulted in previously set limits being lost and frustrated clients anxiously calling wanting the limits reset. This has now been resolved and is no longer an issue, but it was a lesson to be learnt in that technology can create unforeseen circumstance that will impose unexpected costs on those taking up the technology.”

“Programming and synchronisation between devices will quickly become simpler and I believe that with developments in computer learning, in the very near future we will see automatic synchronisation when we first power-on our appliance. This will translate for our industry into blinds and awnings that set their own upper and lower limits; open and close times based on personal preferences for light intensity and programmed functions based on recognition of occupants within the dwelling. If that seems far-fetched, it’s worth remembering that in the 25 years I have had this company I have gone from carrying a ‘brick’ for a phone, to wearing a watch that I can take calls on, send SMS and it is even a GPS.”

Botha notes that the excitement generated on the Rollease Acmeda stand at Super Expo 2019 in June, particularly around the new range, confirmed demand for ongoing innovation in the motorisation space.

“Our motors feature a unique motor head, and cover cap to achieve beautiful shades that hide the motor completely. Added technologies like soft close and the battery check function were especially celebrated at the show for their innovative spin on what motorisation aims to achieve. Similarly, the new integrations the Pulse 2 delivers are very end user centric, helping bridge the gap between the window furnishing industry, and the consumer-tech market.”

“Our extensive history in creating innovative solutions in both internal and external hardware has been leveraged to create motorisation products that synchronise perfectly with existing, popular hardware.”

“The new range has been designed to suit the needs of not just the end user, but every other segment the products are channelled through, whether it be an installer, fabricator or retailer. They are easier to install, easier to fabricate and provide the latest technologies for end users and retailers.”

“Our uniquely designed products blend into the environments of the home. No visible wires on our new motor range mean the motor is concealed perfectly, especially with the addition of our contemporary motor cap. The Pulse 2’s angled exterior is designed to sit comfortably within the decorations of any home, as is the sharp and minimal styling of the Push5.”

“With these tech focused solutions, we’re offering homeowners the latest in design, integration and convenience. This year marks a big year for all smart home integrations. The market is set to expand as more and more consumers are shopping for IoT home products.”

“For retailers, fabricators, installers, the latest releases are easier to install, with the retrofit motors designed to effortlessly upgrade existing shades. Connecting a home to the Pulse is as easy as 1,2,3. The streamlined process ensures less confusion and a faster connection.”

“In terms what we’re bringing to the market, enhanced support is key. We’re working on creating dozens of new videos that are easily accessible on the job. We also have our tech support team on call for added product knowledge. Our marketing team is working closely with Automate distributors, ensuring there’s more knowledge on the products, and more collateral to share with end users.”

“The market for smart home IoT products is growing rapidly and there’s more demand than ever for the products,” Botha concludes. “Smart shades are in their infancy compared to existing smart home products, and the market looks to be expanding exponentially as more consumers become familiar with motorisation. We’re actively working to educate the market and help influence the popularity of IoT solutions.”

LUXAFLEX
The Luxaflex brand has positioned itself at the forefront of the industry with PowerView Motorisation. Integrating seamlessly with Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit and Amazon Alexa, homeowners can now easily control their lighting, temperature and privacy like any other smart device.

Luxaflex PowerView Motorisation enables users to program their blinds to operate on their own throughout the day. The PowerView App is used to create Scenes with preprogrammed blind positions, such as raising to greet the dawn, readjusting to deflect the hot afternoon sun, or closing at night to create the perfect bedtime mood. The Scenes can be programmed to personalised settings such as “movie time” or “good morning” which can be activated by voice command on desired smart assistants like Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit or Amazon Alexa, and also control via smart phone or tablet on the PowerView App.

“Child and pet safety are also becoming increasing concerns for homeowners and a motorised operation system is an ideal cordless solution that combines safety, beauty and complete convenience. Homeowners now have ultimate control to manage shading, energy efficiency and privacy in their home which can actively reduce energy consumption and amp up security,” says Vera Meharg, Marketing Communications Manager, Luxaflex Window Fashions.

“External shading like Luxaflex Evo Awnings reduces cooling energy costs by up to 60 per cent1 as up to 30 per cent of total heat loss from a home occurs through uncovered windows2,” Meharg explains. “This simple action will help reflect heat and UV rays to drastically reduce a room’s heat gain, as well as help protect furniture from sun damage and fading.”

Whether homeowners prefer to have rooms operate independently or work together for whole-house synchronisation, PowerView offers precise operation of a variety of different Luxaflex products and styles, including the popular and virtually maintenance-free Luxaflex PolySatin Shutters. Luxaflex PolySatin Shutters with PowerView Motorisation offers an exclusive override feature that allows manual operation without causing any damage to the motor and are a fantastic option for those conscious of energy conservation. The cellular construction creates a layer of energysaving insulation, trapping air within a distinct, unique pocket. Coupled with the low conductivity characterised by polyresin, this technology greatly reduces heat exchange, keeping the air in, or out as needed. PowerView Motorisation is available in 10 “ultra-modern” Pebble remote collection colours.

BLINDWARE
“No longer regarded as an indulgence, consumers now expect their environments to be fully interactive. They want to be able to operate their entertainment systems, kitchens and air conditioning without needing to move off the couch,” says Blindware Managing Director Grant Norton. “They can even adjust their home environment from the office to ensure it is exactly the way they want it when they arrive home.”

Blindware meets this consumer demand with a fully integrated solution for the Smart Home with the Motolux UFO Hub. Described as “a powerful system in a stylish, compact unit”, the UFO Hub allows all AC and DC tubular motors as well as curtain track to be integrated and controlled effortlessly by the consumer. The unique hardware track system with helical cord winding also allows motorised Roman blinds to use standard 40mm tubular motors making automated control completely accessible to a wider range of users.

“With an unlimited number of output channels and motors that can interface simultaneously with all standard remotes and network Hubs, the level of automation the Motolux UFO Hub provides is something special. It brings whole new meaning to the term integration as it works seamlessly with a wide range of other products as standard, like air conditioning systems, televisions, entertainment and systems. Fully compatible with Google Home and Amazon Alexa, the UFO Hub will fit seamlessly into any home and operated with a simple ‘hey Google, open my blinds!’. The Hub is available to a wide range of consumers with a very competitively priced offer, and the assurance of a five year warranty.”

“In an exciting technical development, Blindware recently completed a direct interface between the popular Motolux 16 channel network HUB and Control 4,” Norton confirms. “This integration allows the Motolux network Hub to interface directly into the Control 4 programming logic using the click and drag tools that are embedded into the Control 4 Integrator product configuration software.”

The innovation saves time and effort when installing Motolux motors into Control 4 networks, he says. “The software offers users the flexibility of allowing them to select multiple Hubs to be installed on a single RS485 network line and easily manage them through individual addressing. Full Raise / Lower / Stop functionality is provided across each individual channel, plus the ability to group channels if required.”

The development was commissioned by Blindware as part of the sale of Motolux motors into a large commercial project in New Zealand by Blindware customer Russells Curtains & Blinds, based in Nelson NZ.
