As the heat turns up, external blinds specialists outline the outstanding features and benefits that drive sales for both well-established and innovative product offerings.

Shann

“Atmosphere isn’t just another external screen mesh, it’s the product that defined the category,” says Melissa Vine, Shann National Product Manager of its flagship product. “Since 2008, Atmosphere has set the standard for performance, durability, and visual clarity, becoming the reference point others strive to match.”

Specifically designed for external use and engineered for harsh Australian conditions, Atmosphere was designed to deliver the perfect balance of solar protection, outward visibility, and architectural refinement.

“It doesn’t just shield interiors from heat and glare, it elevates the entire facade, preserving views while enhancing comfort and efficiency.

“Atmosphere’s legacy of proven performance, trusted reliability, and uncompromising quality remains unmatched. Specified by professionals and trusted by fabricators Atmosphere remains the benchmark and continues to lead, not because it claims to, but because it always has.”

“In a competitive market, the difference isn’t just what you sell, it’s what you trust to carry your name. For over 18 years, Atmosphere has been the external screen mesh fabricators rely on when performance, consistency and reputation matter most.

“Atmosphere continues to deliver where it counts: consistent handling on the table, dependable dimensional stability, and a refined finish that elevates the final installation. It’s engineered not just for performance in the field, but for efficiency and confidence in fabrication.

“When you specify Atmosphere, you’re choosing a product with a proven track record, one recognised by the market, trusted by professionals, and associated with quality. It removes uncertainty, strengthens your offering, and reinforces your position as a supplier of premium external screens.

“In sales, confidence matters. When you’re in front of a customer, you need a product that sells itself, one with a reputation they recognise and performance you don’t have to justify. Atmosphere is that product. It remains the premium external screen offering. It provides a clear point of difference in a crowded market, something proven, trusted, and respected.

“Atmosphere helps you shift the conversation away from price and toward value. Its established reputation makes it easier to specify, easier to recommend, and easier to close. Customers aren’t just buying a screen mesh; they’re buying confidence in a product with a long history of performance in Australian conditions.

“And the same confidence runs across the entire Shann outdoor fabric category. From our Prime Clear PVC, which has its roots in Germany where production started 80 years ago, to Tempotest, our traditional premium solution dyed awning fabric, manufactured by the same family with over a century of expertise developing premium fabrics, Shann offers a complete external fabric range, plus all the accessories, to help businesses win.”

Meyer Blinds

“Demand for Exterior Blinds remains strong as projects prioritise solar control, energy efficiency and year-round outdoor usability. For dealers, the category continues to present opportunities – particularly where performance, design integration and compliance requirements intersect.

Simon Meyer, Managing Director of Meyer Blinds, confirms that recent additions to the Meyer Blinds portfolio include Griesser External Venetian Blinds and the Weinor Sottezza Pure, responding directly to this market direction.

“Griesser External Venetian Blinds, exclusive to Meyer Blinds, are engineered to deliver measurable energy performance. By blocking up to 93% of solar heat during the day while allowing night-time cooling, they can significantly reduce reliance on air conditioning and cut energy costs by up to 50%. During winter, they contribute to up to a 16% reduction in heating energy consumption. This allows dealers to position External Venetians as an active energy management solution rather than a passive shading product.

“The exclusive Griesser BiColor Technology provides further differentiation. With more than 150 standard colour options, dealers can specify one slat colour externally and another internally — maintaining façade consistency while coordinating with interior finishes. Enhanced slat closure improves privacy and light control, while engineered wind stability ensures reliable performance in exposed and multi-storey applications.

“Energy performance is becoming central to the specification process,” says Meyer. “When dealers can demonstrate measurable heat reduction and façade control, the conversation shifts.”

Complementing this, the Weinor Sottezza Pure expands opportunity in the under-glass shading segment. Designed for installation beneath glass roofs, pergolas and conservatories, the tensioned system reduces glare while preserving clean architectural lines. It addresses a gap between Internal Blinds and traditional Awnings, offering effective sun protection in spaces where external systems may not be suitable. As outdoor entertaining areas continue to function as extensions of the home, integrated under-glass solutions create additional project value.

The Exterior Blind category experienced significant growth during Covid-19 travel restrictions, as homeowners redirected spending into outdoor improvements. While that initial surge has moderated, the structural shift toward enhancing outdoor living remains. Larger glazing, energy efficiency awareness and demand for premium finishes continue to drive specification.

The primary challenge for dealers is price competition from lower-cost imports. The opportunity lies in differentiation through engineered European systems with documented performance and technical support.

Meyer notes that more recent changes to the National Construction Code regarding the installation of Awnings and Blinds on upper floors of Class Two through Nine Buildings have increased scrutiny in multi-residential and commercial projects. Dealers operating in these sectors must ensure appropriate specification and compliance alignment, reinforcing the value of system-based solutions.

“With Griesser and Weinor, Meyer Blinds provides dealers with technically credible Exterior Blind systems designed to meet evolving market expectations, supporting stronger value-led conversations in a competitive landscape.”

Ozroll

According to Ozroll, the external blind category continues to evolve as installers and end users demand cleaner aesthetics, easier installation, and systems designed with long-term serviceability in mind.

“At Ozroll, our latest product developments reflect a strong focus on listening to customer feedback and reinvesting into practical innovation that improves both performance and the installer experience.

“One of our key upcoming releases is the Strata square extruded headbox, a purpose-designed system developed to complement our existing external blind range while addressing some common limitations seen in traditional square headbox designs.”

“The Strata headbox features a unique 120 x 130mm profile, which has been engineered specifically to allow for controlled top-tube deflection. This design enables us to accommodate larger blind heights within a square headbox format – something that is often challenging with conventional square designs due to space and clearance restrictions.

“Alongside this, we are introducing a newly designed built-for-purpose top stop mechanism. This innovation significantly simplifies installation and future servicing by allowing the installer to disengage the top stop for access, rather than drilling out rivets when fabric replacement or maintenance is required.

“These developments follow other recent upgrades to our system, including the introduction of a zip retention option alongside our traditional kedar and spline configurations. While the zip system offers enhanced fabric stability and performance, we recognise that installer and customer preferences vary, so we continue to offer spline-based systems for those who prefer that setup. Ultimately, our focus is on building the blind to suit the installer’s preference and project requirements, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.”

The key benefits of these new developments are centred around simplicity, performance and longevity:

  • Greater achievable blind heights within a square headbox design due to improved internal geometry and top-tube deflection allowance.
  • Cleaner, more architectural aesthetic suited to contemporary residential and commercial projects.
  • Installer-friendly design, reducing installation time and complexity.
  • Simplified future servicing, with easier access for fabric replacement or repairs.
  • Improved fabric retention and performance through the transition to zip technology.

A key market gap identified by the company was the balance between architectural design expectations and installer practicality.

“Many square headbox systems look good visually but create challenges in terms of installation tolerances, blind height capability, or ongoing serviceability.

“The Strata system was developed to bridge this gap, delivering a sharp, modern appearance while maintaining the practical functionality installers need on site. By improving accessibility and reducing rework requirements, we’re also helping our customers reduce long-term labour costs and improve overall job efficiency.

“Installers and retailers are increasingly looking for systems that minimise complication onsite and reduce callbacks. As a manufacturer, we see ongoing investment in product refinement as critical to supporting our partners and maintaining long-term industry confidence.

“At Ozroll, our approach to product development is heavily influenced by real-world feedback. The introduction of the Strata headbox, the redesigned top stop mechanism, and the move to zip retention are all examples of listening to installers and investing back into solutions that make their work easier and more efficient.”

Somfy

Thanks to the heatwaves hitting the East coast of Australia, demand for external blinds has continued to grow, according to Somfy.

“Website traffic on our external blinds landing pages, search volumes and even leads we’re receiving and sharing with our Somfy Retail Expert Partners for external products started ramping up from the beginning of spring last year, and have continued well into February,” says Somfy Oceania’s Marketing Manager Mary Ladu.

“We are finding that people looking to adapt their homes are focusing on heat preservation as a key factor, while also considering the natural merge between their home and outdoor spaces.

“Outdoor living is no longer just a trend, it’s a revolution. End-users are transforming their outdoor spaces into real living rooms and are looking to our customers to help them select the best solution.”

Somfy

External blinds provide a multitude of benefits for consumers, from adding value to the home, increasing outdoor entertaining space, and creating an ‘outdoor room’ by enclosing an alfresco area.

In addition, when external blinds are added to windows, they can block heat from entering the home before it reaches the window, easing pressure on cooling systems at a time when rising energy costs are front of mind for consumers.

“External blinds give you the opportunity to create an extra room in your current backyard and these screens tend to be bigger, some with a span of up to 8m wide, making motorisation a must,” says Ladu.

“Somfy has a complete ecosystem of products and services that simplify your installations, reduce intervention time and optimise your profitability.

“Our motors, controls, sensors and smart tools for outdoor spaces are designed to enable you to effectively answer your customers’ expectations while developing your business, thanks to reliable, easy to install, and scalable products.

“Somfy’s Maestria 50 RTS is the universal solution for all types of external screens, including zip systems, and as it is available in different torques, starting from 6Nm, its innovative obstacle detection feature can work on even small screens.”

Using accurate and reliable obstacle detection, the motor will retract when an obstacle is detected to prevent damage. The ultra-precise limit setting allows for the perfect limit position, while automatic limit recalibration ensures perfect fabric tension over the product’s life.

The motor boasts quick and easy installation with three limit setting modes available: manual, semi-automatic and automatic and is compatible with all types of external screens, including those with automatic locks.

Somfy – Maestria 50 RTS
