Light and shade

Issue 97 July 2024

Looking ahead to summer, blockout fabrics continue to play a key role in the Australian window coverings landscape, with evolving texture, colour and functionality all critical. WFA reports.

Wilson Fabrics

Wilson General Manager – Sales & Marketing Peta Fitzgibbon points out that the company’s home grown heritage is a key influence on its evolving blockouts offering.

“Being an Australian Made Licensee represents trust, quality, reliability and supports local jobs, all values we take very seriously and align with everything we stand for! It also comes with the responsibility to meet higher standards to ensure we remain competitive on value. We are very proud to be able to use this logo and it’s a great way to differentiate our products and highlight the value of being Australian Made.”

“Our new Blockout Blind Byron Bay is manufactured locally at our mill in Wangaratta, Victoria to the highest quality standards to achieve our customers’ expectations and carry our core features and benefits; extended 10 Year Interior Warranty, Pitch Black Blockout Coating, Fade Resistant, UVE 95+%, FR and Greenguard Gold Accredited.

“Byron Bay is the perfect balance of textual elegance and casual sophistication. The soft sandy tones and earthy hues capture the essence of the coastal town Byron Bay. This striking fabric design will create a calming and serene atmosphere in any living space. Byron Bay is part of our ColourFlow collection and coordinates with Whitsunday’s Sheer Blind and Drapery and Hayman Blockout Drapery. Byron Bay is available in blockout and translucent options in eight contemporary tones.”

Fitzgibbon notes that blockout products continue to attract demand as a cost-effective solution for energy savings by reducing heat transfer, blocking sunlight, and maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature all year round.

“Blockout blinds reduce heat transfer by creating a barrier between the window and the room. When closed, they prevent direct sunlight from entering the room, minimising solar heat gain. This helps to keep the room cooler in hot weather and reduce the need for air conditioning, leading to energy savings. Additionally, blockout blinds also provide insulation, trapping heat inside during colder months and further enhancing energy efficiency.”

“Sustainable developments have always been a part of our process path because we believe taking care of the environment, being environmentally mindful and responsible are not only great for the environment but is also beneficial for our health. Wilson Fabrics is proud to have our own mill to produce our Australian Made Blind and Drapery ranges.”

“The mill is Greenguard Gold accredited for its low-emissions and contributes to improve indoor air quality. Greenguard Gold certification requires products to meet some of the world’s most rigorous standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds in indoor environments. When a product bears the certification, it meets strict chemical emission limits and has been tested for over 10,000 chemicals. All of Wilson Fabrics Australian Made ranges are Greenguard Gold certified.”

Norman

Norman Marketing Coordinator Giorgia English, tells WFA the company’s range of room darkening fabrics is performing well across SmartDrape, Portrait Honeycomb Shades, PerfectSheer, Soluna Roller Shades, and a unique Blockout Shutter with an integrated Honeycomb Shade.

“These fabrics are designed to enhance light control and privacy, offering a comprehensive solution for any room in the home.”

“The blockout fabrics provide superior light control, making them perfect for bedrooms, media rooms, or any space where complete darkness is desired. For instance, our Soluna Roller Shades can be paired with the LightGuard 360 system, which features a fully encased headrail and side and bottom tracks lined with black bristles, ensuring maximum coverage and privacy.”

Norman

“Similarly, our Blockout Shutter combines the aesthetic appeal of Shutters with the functionality of a Honeycomb Shade, offering an innovative solution that provides excellent insulation and light control. The most advantageous feature of our blockout fabric is its ability to offer the same high level of light blockage with lighter or neutral fabric tones as it does with darker shades.”

“The market for blockout internal fabrics is growing as consumers increasingly prioritise energy efficiency and light control in their homes,” English says. “Homeowners are looking for window treatments that can reduce energy costs while providing a stylish and functional solution. Products that offer both light filtering and room darkening options are highly sought after for their versatility and efficiency.”

English adds that blockout fabrics are finding a range of innovative applications, “especially in creating optimal environments for sleep and relaxation with an increase interest in our circadian rhythms. For example, our Honeycomb Shades are popular in bedrooms to ensure a restful sleep by completely blocking out sunlight and reducing noise.”

Blockout fabrics are also paired with sheer fabrics in dual systems to offer flexible light control and privacy options.

“This combination allows homeowners to enjoy natural light during the day with the sheer fabric while using the blockout fabric for complete privacy and darkness when needed. This can be seen in a range of our products, such as PerfectSheer, SmartDrape and Day/Night Honeycomb Shades which combine two fabric options. It is also seen in our dual shade application, in our Soluna Roller Shades, catering to various lighting needs.”

BM Blinds

Chantelle Todd from BM Blind says: “Blockout fabrics have the ability transform any room while maintaining privacy and reduce the heat radiation from the sun. A popular selection among many households whether used on roller blinds, vertical blinds or panel blinds.”

“Blockout roller blinds have been a favourite for many generations of homeowners, compared to most window coverings, this is a relatively inexpensive and easy to operate product with many different control functions such as chain operation, spring control operation or motorisation.

Todd adds that the blackout roller blind has been a strong seller for BM Blinds, especially when paired with a sunscreen or light filtering fabric. This can be achieved by utilising a double bracket to accommodate a view during the daytime and allowing the privacy of the blockout fabric to work for night time.

Shaw launches Duo Block 3.0 and Edge

Shaw has recently launched two new blackout fabrics; Edge and Duo Block 3.0.

“Edge is a polyester blackout fabric with a subtle linen look, enhancing the Shaw collection with a contemporary textured plain,” says Sarah Harris, Marketing Manager at Shaw.

“The colour palette of the 3 metre wide fabric suits modern and classic interiors; including in response to customer feedback a bright white, warm naturals and neutrals, through to an elegant charcoal.”

“The second fabric is Due Block 3.0 has been developed in response to customer feedback requesting a consistent 3 metre width across all our Roller fabrics and a more matte finish in line with popular paint finishes.”

Harris says Shaw took this opportunity to revisit the colour range of Duo, which now offers ten classic and modern shades, on trend with current interior design.

Shaw – Edge Charcoal

Harris mentions that custom colours are always a possibility for larger contracts which meet minimum order quantities with direct container shipping from overseas.

“Due Block 3.0 has an improved finish and handle but delivers the same durability and quality as its predecessor Duo Block 2.8.

“The transition to Duo Block 3.0 is immediate and all colours are in stock.”

Edge and Duo Block are Greenguard and Greenguard Gold certified and are tested to AS1530 Part III, meeting the requirements of BCA Building Class 2-9a.

“They are lead free and PVC free and have a minimum of 6 light fastness when tested against the blue scale,” Harris adds.

“Edge and Duo Block 3.0 have the benefit of a colour matched foamed acrylic blackout coating so no need to front roll the finished blind or install a pelmet, if not specified by the end user.”

“Blockouts are at the heart of the window furnishings industry taking a majority proportion of retail sales. Duo Block 3.0 pairs extremely well with Shaw’s Duo Screen and Aventus screen fabrics. Edge is a subtle texture and there will sit comfortable behind a sheer drape namely Shaw’s Linesque Air,” Harris adds.
