The latest drapery fabric releases from some of Australia’s best known soft furnishings suppliers promise a memorable performance combining variety, high impact visuals, strength and a quality finish.
WARWICK
Warwick Fabrics continues to offer curtain fabrics featuring premium quality and design and the possibility for co-ordination across soft furnishings.
Arlington is a woven, dualpurpose collection that allows people to mix and match a selection of classic and timeless patterns in both their upholstery and window treatments. The collection includes stripes, checks, and textures that are durable, machine washable and “have a touch of country charm.”
Calverton is a classic ticking stripe digitally printed on a poly/ cotton woven base cloth. “The fibre mix is the perfect blend for anyone looking for a natural look but with added durability. The timeless ticking stripe is offered in 14 colours that can be used for both upholstery and drapery applications.”
Arlington and Calverton are both described as a response to growing interest in tradition and history. “It’s not always necessary to re-invent the wheel. There is an increasing demand for classic, familiar and timeless designs that offer both beauty and longevity. Both Arlington and Calverton collections celebrate simplicity, and style.”
Meanwhile Polaris is described as “a beautiful jacquard woven quality made up with a natural fibre blend of cotton, viscose and polyester.”
“This fibre mix gives the piece dyed quality a lovely lustre and subtle aesthetic. We have kept the design organic and abstract so that it is versatile and timeless. The colour range is also earthy and nature inspired so that it can easily be placed in both contemporary and classic interiors.”
“As upholstery designs have become more adventurous we have seen drapery take a slight step back to let its surroundings shine. However this doesn’t meant that drapes need to be plain. Polaris is a good option
Warwick Fabrics – Calverton for anyone who still wants to experiment with design in their window treatments, but wants a subtle and nature inspired pattern that will stand the test of time.”
“Mythos has a stunning stria pattern and subtle metallic sheen. With a 300cm continuous wide-width and self-weighted finish, it’s serene, sophisticated and versatile. Meanwhile, Adler is a soft and sophisticated sheer made with a bamboo, cotton and polyester blend. The micro pinstripe design gives the quality a tranquil and ethereal aesthetic.”
“Both Mythos and Adler answer the growing demand for wide width drapery qualities that can be made up with no seams.”
JAMES DUNLOP GROUP
James Dunlop
James Dunlop’s most recent release is the Complexity Collection, comprising a comprehensive blend of designs and qualities “inspired from the timeless combination of black and white.” From this the collection grew to include midscale geometrics as well as designs with a traditional aesthetic modernised through the inclusion of monochromatic colour.
“We are seeing increasing demand for 300cm wide products in the market as well as new print designs. The use of printing creates a great platform to bring colour and design into the home through the use of textiles.”
Mokum
From the La Primavera Collection, Mokum’s Peonia and Papillon prints embrace feminine form and a romantic palette, “inspired by fashion’s floral fixation.”
“Peonia features flower laden peony branches and whimsical bumble bees, inspired by the global ecological threat of rapidly declining bee populations. This 100% softly tumbled linen print has been custom coloured in a decorative yet subtle residential palette. Papillon is Mokum’s ode to classic print, recreating a traditional art form of floral print on chintz and modernising it through scale and colour. French for butterfly, Papillon features undulating wisteria branches and playful butterflies. This highly decorative print is available in three contemporary and unexpected colourways and sits on a soft cotton chintz.” Both Peonia and Papillon were designed in Mokum’s Sydney based studio, expertly hand painted in Germany and digitally printed to capture the subtle watercolour effects in England at one of the world’s oldest and most renowned printing mills.
Mokum’s Ombre is a new wide width sheer featuring a seamless ombre to create a sense of fluidity and movement at the window. The fabric is printed in Italy and custom coloured in an edited palette of romantic pastels and one neutral. Passing local FR standards and washable to 30 degrees, this 100% polyester sheer is a transitional drapery treatment suiting both residential and commercial spaces.
Kensho and Tempest are Mokum’s latest wide width, polyester blend drapery designs. “Kensho is as beautiful as it is technical; the shabby open weave construction sits within a fine transparent pocket weave to create invisible stability. With the organic aesthetic of slubby linen but in a predominately polyester composition, Kensho is a robust drapery design in a palette of sophisticated neutrals suited to both rustic and contemporary schemes. Tempest is a beautiful lightweight sheer, evoking a sense of calming movement at the window. Predominantly polyester, but with the look and feel of finely woven cotton, Tempest is coloured in a balanced palette of neutrals and soft pastels to offer a practical drapery solution that doesn’t compromise on beauty.”
A fresh wide width linen, Obi Stonewash is a rhythmic multipurpose linen that has been expertly stonewashed and softly tumbled. Yarn dyed to create further dimension, this 100% linen has been custom coloured in a palette of warm and cool neutrals and chalky pastels. Obi stonewash is wide width, washable and suitable for drapery, light duty upholstery and top-of-bed.
“Mokum provides the local market with fabrics that offer European decorative quality but are designed to suit this part of the world, which is more relaxed and pared back.”
“We upscale our prints to modernise them by creating negative space and custom colour them in liveable colourways which are slightly greyed off due to the abundance of bright natural light in Australasia. Polyester blends are also a key to the range. With our unique Australasian environmental conditions we endeavour to create beautiful drapery options that have the look and feel of natural compositions but are synthetic blends for added durability and easy care and maintenance.”
“One of the biggest challenges we are facing at present is the market’s demand for wider and wider draperies as ceiling heights continue to expand. We are navigating challenges with our supply chain and limitations with textile loom width capabilities. We are also experiencing issues with transporting extra wide fabrics rolled on tubes. DHL have put in place strict width restrictions and anything over and above this width either needs to be folded, which poses an issue for some textiles that can’t be folded and/or ironed, or transportation becomes very specialised and costly.”
HOAD
Hoad Fabrics is finding a high demand for high quality, well priced, extra wide sheers, driven by several factors, according to National Sales Manager Mathew Hobbs.
“Modern homes feature far more window area in their designs than ever before. The growing trend is to cover these spaces from ceiling to floor using a sheer as the feature drape and in many cases combining it with a co-ordinating lining. Sheers are also becoming more prevalent, in combination with other window coverings like blinds or shutters.”
“Our most recent sheer range is Avoca. It addresses the current sheer market perfectly featuring a 330cm width, a modern texture and matt finish combined with a weighted base and comes in ten contemporary colours. It is another addition to our collection of 320cm plus sheers.”
“The demand for sheers has also increased the need for co-ordinating linings to protect them. We recently released our new flagship blockout lining “CMB 320″. As its name suggests it’s 320cm wide and is currently the widest coloured lining on the market today. We have also added silicone to the coating process to add an extra layer of durability to the finish. It’s perfect for areas prone to moisture where previously a coated lining would not have been considered. We have sampled it with a full length 80cm feeler of each of its thirteen colours to make it easier when combining with a colour matched sheer.”
“As a middle market supplier of blockout fabrics, textured plains have always been a staple within our range. Avena and Tempo, our latest blockout releases, reflect this. Both are 290cm wide to minimise the need for joins in the curtain and to add to the economical nature of the products . They both feature the addition of silicone to the coating for durability. They have a distinct character and texture, along with trending colour palettes. Going forward, we see wide width fabrics, both uncoated and blockout, becoming more prevalent in the market. We have several new releases due over the coming months to address this demand.”
Hoad has always been well known for traditional jacquard ranges and they continue to perform well. “The Utopia collection is our latest edition. It combines three contemporary designs: Luxor, Cellini and Belgravia, across three colourways each. It also features Baccarat, an opulent embroidery resplendent in five inviting colours, all co-ordinating together creating a traditional range with a modern twist.”
“The market has been consistent throughout this year and we see no reason why it won’t continue into next year. Curtains are definitely making a comeback. In my opinion the middle market where we sit is possibly the strongest it’s ever been in my 25 years of involvement. It’s also the most competitive it’s ever been. We will continue to look for new and unique ranges, refine our colours and continue to offer products that are reliable and great value for money.”
CHARLES PARSONS INTERIORS
Charles Parsons Interiors’ textiles set for release this spring, “bring the sophistication of more tailored options to larger settings, providing classic styling at affordable prices.”

With new flair, this latest range is the evolution of form and function in interior design. These fabrics are the modern interpretation of classic finishes, including elegant linen textures and sheers that add the delicate yet durable touch to large glassed areas. Subtle floral patterns in 315cm continuous repeat are highlighted with muted metallics.”

Jardin is a subtly patterned jacquard in a range of neutral basics for every home, perfect for any room with large amounts of natural light
“Grandiflora brings a touch of colour to the Charles Parsons printed sheer range. Zesty yellow sits alongside the calming soft blues and muted greens in a beautiful sheer with delicate colour accents in flower motifs. Grandiflora will sit well in an array of interiors as a feature piece.”
With 14 colour options to choose from, Gemini is a beautiful semisheer in a reversible offering that features a soft drape for a natural, relaxed look that can be worked into any range of interior settings, from the private home to a commercial project.
Suitable for a range of commercial settings is the Trio sheer, with a sleek and modern look that works well in a contemporary setting.
The Verdure completes the new printed sheer releases, featuring a timeless leaf pattern print for a beautiful watercolour effect on a textured sheer base, for a more modern take on botanical prints.
Meanwhile, “Casa is aptly named for the way it works for the living space to create a sleek sense of the modern home. Available in a dreamy range of pearly whites to shimmery smoke colours, it works with any modern setting.”
ROWE
Rowe celebrates the launch of 2020 Spring / Summer, with the release of five new product offerings. “This range builds on the previous strengths of past collections, broadening the horizons of interior design by taking inspiration from the tropics and its lush foliage and the multi-textured elements of contemporary high ceiling architecture.”
“For a fresh take on tropical designs, the Ventura collection comes in six colours across four large print botanical designs that can be adapted to everything including drapery, chairs, cushions, pelmets, or bed heads. The crisp designs on 100% cotton base cloth will light up the room in the warm sunlight of a summer afternoon.”
“For a more sophisticated take on the tropics and its lush foliage, Silva picks up the current trend of bold, natureinspired interior textiles. It makes a statement as a wide flowing sheer fabric featuring a subtle shimmering metallic print in two warm neutral shades, which can be seamlessly installed into the high ceilings of contemporary architecture.
Also available for a perfect fit into a modern high ceilinged room, the Gemona sheer draws inspiration from architecture in the bold lines of contemporary buildings, with its soft but striking large-scale crosshatch pattern. Another classic Rowe statement sheer, it adds a decisively contemporary design element to modern interiors across five subtle colour-ways. Woven in 100% polyester and tested to Australian and New Zealand fire standards, Silva is especially targeted to commercial applications.
The Ferrara textile also builds on the geometric inspirations of Gemona, but picks up on the complex levels of textures found both in modern construction and nature. Ferrara is described as an intricate interior textile woven in a complex construction of polyester, viscose and cotton fibres, and overprinted with a multi-coloured textural design. Available in six complex colourways, the interplay of the many shades will enable Ferrara to work with any interior colour story, whether it’s made up as drapery, cushions, pelmets or bed heads.
“Tying the new collection together is the new Rowe velvet Modena, developed especially as drapery, upholstery and accessory fabric. Available in 17 colours, its jewel tones bring out the best of the vivacious Ventura Collection, and the softer and more muted neutral shades blend seamlessly into the colour stories of Silva, Gemona and Ferrara.”
