Quay Quarter Tower has earned global acclaim having been voted the 2023 Best Tall Building Worldwide by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat – (CTBUH) for its standout design and sustainability.

Originally constructed in 1976 as AMP Centre Tower by architects Peddle Thorp and Walker, the building’s more recent profile has emerged due to its status as the world’s first ‘upcycled’ skyscraper; one that has been innovatively repurposed rather than demolished. 

The construction method recycled and enhanced the existing structure, resulting in a modern tower and retail space. This approach conserved 6.1 million kg of embodied carbon, reduced the project’s carbon emissions by 5%, and equalled a two-year offset of its operational carbon footprint.

IMC Financial Markets has leased 5,740 square metres of prime office space in the Quay Quarter Tower, spanning levels 16 and 40 to 42.

Somfy was engaged to deliver automated shading systems to IMC, supporting its and the overall building’s eco-friendly objectives by intelligently responding to external conditions, enhancing thermal comfort and decreasing reliance on artificial lighting.

The project utilised 180 Somfy Sonesse 40 WT motors, managed by 50 KNX 4AC Motor Controllers.  The Somfy animeo KNX Blind Control System efficiently regulates and synchronises the building functions, ensuring optimal occupant comfort and energy efficiency.

Window furnishings specialist Solis Products was engaged as the project’s commercial partner. 

Scott Johnston, General Manager for Solis, said he was pleased with the efficiency of how the project was rolled out to achieve a low carbon outcome.
