Recessed, motorised and smarter: curtain hardware raises the bar in 2026

Issue 108 May 2026

Recessed tracks are becoming the specification of choice across new residential and commercial builds, battery-powered motorisation continues to outpace wired solutions, and smart-home compatibility is shifting from premium add-on to baseline expectation. Four suppliers share what is driving the change, and what installers and retailers need to get right.

The recessed curtain track has moved from architectural edge case to mainstream specification in a short window. Across new residential builds and commercial fitouts, the brief increasingly calls for a flush ceiling finish with no visible hardware, no gap above the fabric, and no compromise on motor or fabric performance. Suppliers have responded: the past twelve months have produced purpose-built recessed systems, slimmer motorised track profiles, expanded decorative colour ranges, and a wave of smart-home integration that is no longer confined to premium projects.

Battery-powered motors continue to grow faster than any other segment in the curtain motor category, driven by lower installation cost (no licensed electrician required), improved battery capacity, and the proliferation of affordable smart-home hubs in the consumer market. Matter compatibility is arriving in motors as a standard feature, not a product tier. At the same time, the design conversation around hardware has shifted: consumers increasingly want tracks hidden or recessed, and the curtain itself to carry the visual weight. For retailers and installers, this creates both a specification challenge and an upsell opportunity. The hardware has to perform at a higher standard, and the margin is there to support it.

Four suppliers active in the curtain hardware category outline their current offer, recent product developments, and what they are seeing on the ground from installers and specifiers.

SOMFY

Somfy’s curtain hardware centres on its Glydea Ultra and Movelite motor ranges, covering AC and WireFree options across 35, 50 and 60 kilogram lifting capacities, and a spread of technologies including WT, RTS, DCT Zigbee and RS485. The accessory suite is designed to work across the full range, which has direct inventory implications for trade partners.

“At Somfy, our customer-centric approach when innovating motors and hardware is important,” says Nicki Beggs, Product Marketing Executive, Somfy. “Our silent accessories and black curtain hardware remain popular for this reason, as they were developed in response to customer feedback.”

The black curtain accessory range addresses a sustained design preference in the market. “The Somfy black curtain accessories allow our Curtain Partners to deliver a refined, elegant aesthetic, tapping into the timeless appeal of dark tones in interior design,” Beggs says.

Acoustic performance is the other area where Somfy’s accessory design has focused. Silent accessories paired with the Glydea Ultra deliver what Beggs describes as “an exceptionally smooth and whisper-quiet curtain movement, ideal for bedrooms, hospitality venues, and other sound-sensitive environments.” For hotel fitouts or high-end residential master bedrooms, this distinction is increasingly part of the brief rather than a bonus.

Compatibility across the range is a deliberate product strategy. “All our motors in the Glydea Ultra and Movelite ranges are compatible with Glydea Ultra tracks and accessories,” Beggs says. “This makes it easier for our partners to streamline inventory and specify with confidence.”

The Glydea Ultra 50 WireFree Zigbee motor reflects the same design thinking applied to the installation workflow. “Our dedicated curtain accessories for the Glydea Ultra 50 WireFree Zigbee motor offer easy installation, and support both classic and ripple-fold curtains,” Beggs says. “The motor features a pulley which allows for four mounting positions (0 degrees, 90 degrees, 180 degrees, -90 degrees) and an adjustable hook for precise curtain alignment during final fit-out.”

For installers working on retrofit or upgrade projects, Somfy has built in a practical solution. “The pulley adaptor plate also allows an installer to upgrade an existing job to the new Glydea Ultra 50 WireFree Zigbee motor, without having to pull apart the track assembly to change the pulley,” Beggs says.

Somfy curtain motors and hardware are designed for horizontal mounting and carry compatibility across curtain styles, track shapes, opening methods, fabrics, and fabric attachment methods.

CW SYSTEMS

CW Systems has introduced three product developments in recent months: the R21 recessed track, cam-lock brackets for its Premium track range, and four new colours for the PM33 round track.

Ramses Boktor, Marketing Operations Manager at CW Systems, describes the R21 as a product designed to meet demand that has been building steadily. “We have just launched our R21 recessed track, designed in-house, offering a sleek, slim and flush finish blending into the roof,” Boktor says. “We have also added new accessories to our Premium track offering: cam-lock brackets, allowing for easy and quick track locking into brackets, without the need of a screwdriver.” The PM33 round track now comes in brushed silver, gold, brushed bronze and anthracite, expanding the colour offer for decorative applications.

On motorisation, Boktor identifies battery-powered solutions as the primary growth area. “Motorisation continues to grow year on year, seeing the biggest growth in battery-powered solutions. This is due to easy installation, lower cost for the consumer (no electrician required) and technology that has evolved allowing larger battery capacity.” The connected-home market is pulling the category further: “The growth in the connected-home market has played a big factor, making it affordable and easy to set up for many.”

Track profiles are also getting slimmer as motor and belt engineering advances. “We are also seeing innovation with motorised tracks, using smaller belts and pulleys, allowing for a slimmer track than traditional,” Boktor says. “Our SM20 track is a great example of this at just 20 x 20mm in dimension.” The Premium decorative range extends this to round motorised tracks: “There is also the move to decorative tracks now being motorised, moving away from the standard squared tracks.”

On smart-home integration, Boktor is direct about where the market is heading. “The driving force behind this is smart-home matter devices and hubs that can be purchased off the shelf at local retail stores at affordable prices,” he says. “This allows the technology to become a standard across many products including window coverings. Motors are starting to have Matter built in and this will only increase over the next few years.”

Boktor also flags recurring specification and installation errors. Measurement is the most common. “We tend to see that sometimes the curtain is check-measured from where the top of fabric would sit, instead of the top of bracket being installed,” he says. “Also sometimes deductions are made to sit off the floor, not realising deductions are applied by default to sit 10mm off the floor.” Double S-wave configurations are another source of problems: “Having a double S-wave curtain track tends not to be the best option as they rub against each other causing friction and also tend to move the other curtain during operation. The better option is to have a standard header paired with an S-wave, which gives good clearance without issues.”

Bent track specifications cause confusion at the measuring stage as well. “The track itself is manufactured smaller than the walls measured, depending on the projection from the wall,” Boktor says. “We try to simplify this by offering a standard track projection from the wall.”

For retailers weighing up the premium hardware conversation with clients, Boktor’s view is clear. “Premium hardware is definitely worth the upsell,” he says. “It gives a point of difference to the standard tracks on the market. It also offers additional features, and accessories are usually only available with premium, such as different shaped tracks, more colour options, bracket styles, and finials to dress the ends.”

Aesthetic trends are reinforcing this shift toward premium. “Consumers tend to prefer tracks to be hidden when standard tracks are used, where the highlight is the curtain,” Boktor says. “Wall mounting continues to be the most common install type, but we are seeing an increase in ceiling mounting which gives a nice floor-to-ceiling effect. In new builds, there tends to be more recessed fitting, where it is easy to provision in the build stage.”

Meyer Blinds

Meyer Blinds has expanded its curtain hardware offer in 2026 with two products aimed at the premium residential and commercial specification market: PureGlyde, an exclusive recessed motorised Curtain Track system, and the Silent Gliss SG6870, a hand-operated Curtain Track with matching recess profile.

Simon Meyer, Managing Director, Silent Gliss by Meyer Blinds, explains the rationale behind PureGlyde. Released in early 2026, the system pairs Somfy Glydea Ultra and Movelite motor systems with a custom-designed aluminium recess profile and engineered componentry, built specifically to address the installation, servicing, and finishing limitations that have historically made recessed motorised Curtain applications difficult to execute cleanly.

“Rather than adapting existing hardware to suit recessed installations, Meyer Blinds developed PureGlyde as a fully integrated solution from the ground up,” Meyer says. The defining feature is the exclusive custom aluminium extrusion and engineered motor end design, which allows for a straight wall-to-wall ceiling recess cut-out. “Traditional recessed Curtain systems often require oversized or rounded ceiling openings to accommodate motor ends and belt returns, creating inconsistencies within otherwise minimal architectural spaces. PureGlyde eliminates this issue by delivering a cleaner and more precise recessed finish while also simplifying installation.”

The system integrates Somfy Glydea Ultra alongside Movelite and Zigbee motor options, providing flexibility across residential and commercial specifications while maintaining a consistent hardware platform. A removable wedge fixing system improves both installation efficiency and future access for servicing. PureGlyde also supports simultaneous bending of both the curtain track and recess profile, enabling continuous curves or fixed-radius bends without moulded plastic corner pieces. Track lengths extend to 12 metres, covering the larger spans common in open-plan commercial applications and high-end residential living areas.

Complementing PureGlyde is the Silent Gliss SG6870 Hand Operated Curtain Track System with matching recess profile. Meyer describes it as “the square-profile version of Meyer Blinds’ best-selling SG6840 system,” delivering a clean, contemporary appearance with the added capability of recess installation. The medium-weight hand-operated system is designed for projects that require a refined recessed finish without motorisation, giving specifiers a manual option within the same architectural aesthetic as the motorised PureGlyde range.
