Leading motorisation, automation and connectivity specialists share how innovative solutions continue to fill critical gaps in the market. WFA reports.

Shaw

The ShawSmart motor range has recently expanded with the introduction of RF-only motors, developed in direct response to customer feedback, says Shaw Head of Division, Ben Hayek.

“Many of our partners told us they needed a more cost-effective solution for projects where advanced automation isn’t required, but quality and reliability still matter.”

“These RF-only motors deliver simple remote-control operation without the need for smart hubs, making them perfect for budget-conscious residential and commercial applications. The 1.8Nm torque allows retailers to motorise the vast majority of blinds and utilise the same remotes used on the Zigbee models for total compatibility.“

By listening to the market and adding this streamlined option alongside our existing Zigbee 3.0 motor solutions, ShawSmart now provides a complete offering.

Ben points out that the new ShawSmart RF-only motors provide a simple, reliable, and cost-effective motorisation option.

“Built to the same high standards as the wider ShawSmart range, they deliver smooth, quiet performance. By combining affordability, ease of use, and dependable operation, these motors broaden the ShawSmart portfolio and give retailers greater flexibility to meet market demand. The range also includes the compact AM25 motor, perfectly suited to narrow blind applications where space is limited, available in AC and DC power options just like the rest of the range.”

“The new ShawSmart RF-only motors are designed to fill the gap between premium smart home automation and entry-level manual operation. Many projects don’t require full connectivity or app control, but still demand the convenience and reliability of motorisation. By offering a cost-effective, remote-controlled solution – including the compact AM25 motor for narrow blinds – ShawSmart gives retailers a quality option for budget-conscious or space-restricted applications, without compromising on performance.”

In recent years, Australian consumers have become much more aware of connected home products and motorised window furnishings, Hayek notes. “With smart home apps, wireless solutions, and energy efficiency benefits now widely understood, many homeowners actively consider motorisation when building or renovating, rather than viewing it as a luxury.”

“Our ShawSmart motors are supported by a reliable network of suppliers who ensure fast, consistent delivery and excellent service. This means retailers can confidently plan projects, knowing they’ll have the products they need, when they need them.”

Since its launch in March 2025, ShawSmart has attracted strong demand from Shaw partners, Hayek says. “The expansion of the motor range, including the new RF-only and AM25 motors, strengthens our offering and creates exciting opportunities for our retail and fabrication partners to grow their business and meet a wider variety of customer needs.”

“At the heart of this innovation are the CM-50-E tubular motors for roller, roman, and venetian blinds, and the CM-51-E motor for curtains. These are the first and only 24V DC wired motors to integrate Matter, Thread, RF 433MHz, and Dry Contact technology, positioning Motionblinds as the most advanced wired shading solution on the market.”

Klein Tuente highlights the impact of this innovation: “With the addition of the new wired motors complementing our battery-powered range, Motionblinds now delivers a complete motor solution for every building and project. The new 24V DC motors stand out as the only wired motors to combine Matter, Thread, RF 433MHz and Dry Contact. This combination of plug-and-play wiring with multi-connectivity options makes Motionblinds the most future-proof choice for smart buildings today.”

The CM-50-E and CM-51-E motors feature 24V DC plug-and-play wiring, making installation simple and efficient – eliminating the need for specialized electricians.

The integration of Matter and Thread, the smart building technologies of tomorrow, ensures the motors remain future-proof. As part of self-healing Thread mesh networks, the always-powered wired motors act as Full Thread Devices (FTDs), extending the network’s reach to far corners of the building, enhancing connectivity and reliability.

The motor’s dry contact cable enables control via blind actuators for direct integration with building management systems, including KNX, Control4, Loxone, and others. Built-in RF 433MHz radio frequency allows operation through remote controls, bridges, and domotica boxes.

The new motors come with Coulisse’s patented pull control, allowing users to manually override smart automations at any time, without having to use apps or remote controls. Physical buttons on the motors allow for manual programming of end limits, both in manufacturing and on site, saving time and hassle.

The 24V DC motors feature speed control for accurate bottom bar alignment with multiple shades in a row. The motors have no maximum operating time, enabling smooth and uninterrupted performance without overheating, making them ideal for premium interior design projects.

“The new wired motors build on Motionblinds’ proven range of battery-powered solutions, creating a complete ecosystem for every project type. This expansion of Coulisse’s motor portfolio marks a major leap in automated shading – delivering a scalable, flexible, and future-ready solution for both residential and commercial spaces.”

Somfy

Nicki Beggs, Product Marketing Executive for Somfy Oceania, notes that although cost-of-living pressures and rising interest rates in recent years have caused a dip in large-scale renovations, the Housing Industry Association (HIA) reports that demand has continued for smaller, targeted updates in the home such as kitchens, window furnishings and smart technology upgrades.

“We are still seeing consumers investing in motorisation in both the renovation and new build space, and notably there is an increase in consumer demand for connected living,” says Beggs. “Approximately 45% of Australian households now have at least one smart home device, with forecasts pushing this to 60% by 2028.”

Somfy’s smart shading ecosystem specifically targets this growing demand through its connected solution, TaHoma switch, and Somfy’s range of motors and controls featuring Zigbee 3.0 technology.

The range features bi-directional feedback, a streamlined discreet motor head, fast charging USB-C and interoperability with home automation systems such as Control4.

Somfy – TaHoma switch

The comprehensive offer provides benefits for users in all types of installations, whether it be connected solutions with TaHoma switch and app or voice control(with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa or Siri), or a standalone setup where a remote is the user’s preferred method of blind control.

“Adding a touch of connectivity opens a world of possibilities with the TaHoma switch boasting compatibility with close to 300 types of Somfy products and major home equipment brands such as Philips Hue, Sonos and Netatmo.”

“It also meets the needs of end users who are looking for new ways to save on their energy bills. Somfy makes that simple by allowing you to set and forget.”

“With TaHoma switch users can program window coverings to close at dusk during winter and keep the heat in before the temperature drops. Conversely, in summer, blinds can be programmed to lower at the hottest times of the day, so the home stays cool, relieving pressure on the air conditioning system.”

“In the TaHoma by Somfy app itself, there is also a section called ‘My Energy’. This provides users with energy tips and consumption alerts to help them save money and reduce energy consumption.”

“End users can set up parameters to conserve energy for products in the home. For example, if a connected light has been on for more than four hours, an alert will pop up on the end user’s phone and advise the light has been on, prompting them to take action.”

“The app is designed with the user experience in mind, providing value beyond just controlling window coverings.”

The Smart Shading range also includes the Izymo Motor Receiver which utilises Zigbee 3.0 technology to easily upgrade existing Somfy WT motors with mechanical limit switches, and connect seamlessly with the Somfy ecosystem for control through the TaHoma by Somfy app.

Somfy – Zigbee 3.0

The upgrade opens up the home to smart control compatibilities, Beggs notes.

“The trend of end users taking on DIY projects continues, meaning a growth in WireFree (battery) motors, which Somfy offers in both RTS and Zigbee.”

“For exteriors, our motorisation offer is robust and high performing.”

“Since its introduction, Somfy’s Maestria motor for external screens has become a clear favourite amongst retailers, thanks to its smart obstacle detection technology that safeguards awning fabric.”

“Featuring automatic limit setting modes and auto-learning to ensure self-tensioning, Maestria reduces the risk of costly warranty claims and call-out costs from fabric unspooling or jamming inside the headbox.”

“This provides consumers peace of mind while offering long-term cost benefits for both retailers and end users.”

“The availability of black as a standard finish answers growing demand from architects, designers, and homeowners for motorised systems that integrate seamlessly with dark curtain tracks, fixtures, and modern colour palettes,” says Meyer. “It enables the trade to specify high-performance motorisation without compromising on aesthetic consistency.”

He adds that the motorisation sector is seeing continued growth, with clients expecting systems that integrate into broader smart home ecosystems. Control via remote, app, or automation is now the norm, alongside a preference for quiet operation, energy efficiency, and minimal visual intrusion.

“Shifts toward hybrid working and reduced travel have further boosted interest in motorised window treatments. With more time spent at home, clients are prioritising comfort, light control, privacy, and thermal performance – all delivered at the touch of a button. For home offices, living areas, and multi-use spaces, the combination of convenience and design appeal is proving a strong sales driver.”

“For the industry, the SG 9060 in black expands specification possibilities. It offers a solution for high-end projects where detail, colour coordination, and acoustic performance matter just as much as technical capability. It also gives retailers and installers a product that responds directly to customer expectations for motorisation that is both functional and design-conscious.”

Norman

The conversation around automation is changing. It’s no longer about whether it’s available, but about the range of options on offer. For retailers, this means having solutions that can meet a spectrum of customer expectations, from the homeowner seeking a simple, affordable first step into motorisation, to the tech-savvy client building a fully connected smart home. Norman has expanded its motorisation range with this in mind, providing retailers with a comprehensive offering designed to meet the varied needs of their customers.

“The latest addition to Norman’s range, AutoWand Motorisation, is available for Roller, Roman, and PerfectSheer Shades, and provides an affordable entry point into motorisation. With a built-in motor and integrated wand control, it eliminates the need for a separate remote or app. The wand sits neatly beside the shade, and with three simple buttons, up, down, or stop, customers have instant control at their fingertips. It’s an intuitive system that allows homeowners to experience automation without complexity, while giving retailers a straightforward way to upsell.”

“AutoWand also creates an important option for customers who may find cords or cordless systems difficult to operate. Older homeowners, those with limited mobility, or anyone who simply prefers a direct, no-fuss solution can enjoy the convenience of motorisation without learning to use a complex remote or phone app. With the controls built directly into the wand, AutoWand offers an accessible, affordable, and practical choice that makes everyday living easier, and opens the door for retailers to reach an even wider customer base.”

“The next step up in Norman’s motorisation range is remote-operated window furnishings. This option adds another layer of convenience, particularly for homes with multiple motorised shades, and offers enhanced features such as setting favourite positions for quick, customised control. With a choice of two remote styles, homeowners can select the control that feels most intuitive and best suits their budget. For retailers, it’s an easy way to present a mid-tier solution that balances functionality, flexibility, and value.”

Norman

“At the top end of Norman’s motorisation range is the ShadeAuto Hub, designed for customers who want full smart-home connectivity. Added on top of remote-operated motorisation, the Hub links all Norman motorised products into one integrated system, controlled through the ShadeAuto app or by voice with assistants such as Google, Alexa or Siri. Retailers can demonstrate how customers might set personalised schedules, such as opening at sunrise or closing while they’re away on holidays, to highlight the convenience and peace of mind the system provides. For retail partners, the Hub represents a premium solution that appeals to the growing segment of tech-savvy clients, completing a three-tier pathway that allows every customer to find the right level of motorisation for their needs and budget.”

“It’s not just about offering different levels of motorisation, Norman has built features across the range that make the products safer, easier to use, and more reliable. Shutters and Honeycomb motorisation include an in-built auto brake that stops movement if an obstacle is detected, protecting both the product and anything in its path. Honeycomb shades can also be operated with a simple tap on the bottom bar to raise, lower, or stop, giving customers another intuitive control option. For Honeycomb and Soluna Roller shades, an innovative charging wand provides a safe and easy recharging method, while motorised shutters feature integrated solar panels that extend battery charge life. These design details not only enhance everyday usability for homeowners but also give retailers clear points of difference to highlight when presenting Norman’s motorisation range.”

“Another benefit of choosing Norman for motorised products is reliability. With a vertically integrated model, Norman designs and manufactures its own motorisation systems rather than relying on external suppliers. This minimises supply chain risks and ensures consistent availability, giving retailers and their customers confidence that Norman products can always be relied upon.”

“As automation continues to grow across every part of the home, motorisation is set to become an essential feature rather than an optional upgrade. For retailers, this shift represents an opportunity to upsell, differentiate, and meet customers where they are, whether that’s entry-level simplicity, mid-tier convenience, or full smart-home integration. With a comprehensive range, unique safety and usability features, and the security of vertical integration, Norman gives retail partners the confidence to embrace this trend and the tools to turn it into long-term growth.”
