Investing to progress environmental outcomes

Issue 99 November 2024

In this edition of Window Furnishings Australia, we put the spotlight on transformative eco-initiatives shaping the future of the window furnishings industry.

From Somfy Foundation’s two decades of community support and environmental stewardship to Norman’s remarkable 21% CO2 emissions reduction and Luxaflex’s innovative recycled materials, industry leaders are redefining sustainability through practical and impactful solutions. Demonstrating advances such as Outlook’s market-leading green mesh with bio-based plasticisers, these pioneering efforts highlight a shared commitment to environmental responsibility, aligning product innovation with sustainable practices.

Somfy Foundation Celebrates Milestone Anniversary

Kim Henretty, Marketing Manager for Somfy Oceania says that the company is committed to corporate social responsibility, giving back to the community, and lending a hand, not only financially but also through volunteering efforts.

“This year, Somfy Group proudly celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Somfy Foundation and 10 years of working with Habitat for Humanity globally,” Henretty says.

“The organisation is not only focused on lowering the impact of its operations on the environment but also broadened its scope of action for Somfy Foundation in 2021 to three key areas: promoting access to healthy, sustainable housing, improving social integration, and preserving the environment.”

“Today, Somfy Foundation’s ‘Together for better living on the planet’ embodies Somfy Group’s commitment to corporate social responsibility.”

Henretty says that the last 10 years of collaboration between Somfy and Habitat for Humanity have positively impacted hundreds of families across 15 countries, including locally in Oceania.

“This milestone reflects the shared commitment to improve housing conditions and to build safer and healthier living environments for those in need.”

“We truly value the efforts and dedication of those who have contributed to this important cause throughout these years. These milestones demonstrate Somfy’s long-term commitment and inspiring vision for the future. We thank Somfy team members past and present for their efforts and commitment to this cause,” Henretty adds.

Norman slashes carbon dioxide output

Brandon Rigby, General Manager of Norman Australia, says the company is committed to reducing our environmental footprint and enhancing our sustainability efforts.

“We’ve made significant progress across various areas, including reducing carbon emissions, managing water consumption, improving waste management, and expanding our use of renewable energy. These actions reflect our ongoing dedication to a greener, more sustainable future.”

“One of our most impactful achievements this past year was reducing CO2 emissions by 21%, amounting to 91,771 tonnes. This milestone speaks to our concerted efforts to cut down on operational emissions, which we’ve achieved through measures like increasing energy efficiency and incorporating more renewable energy into our operations.”

“Additionally, we’ve made significant headway in reducing transport emissions, cutting over 9,600 tonnes, which underscores our commitment to minimising emissions throughout our supply chain.”

Rigby says the company has also cut overall energy use by 27% year-on-year.

“Our shift towards greener energy is further reflected by the 1 GWh of renewable energy we’ve produced and utilised, demonstrating our commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and improving the efficiency of our operations.”

“In 2023, we managed to recycle 48% of the waste we created. This high recycling rate shows our dedication to minimising the environmental impact of our manufacturing processes and embracing more circular, sustainable practices.”

“We’ve ensured that our operations and products remain free from hazardous materials, and we continue to comply 100% with Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) regulations. This commitment underscores our focus on maintaining safety and responsibility in everything we do.”

Water conservation is also a priority for Norman, with a 22% reduction in water usage compared to the previous year.

“This effort is especially important given the global challenges related to water scarcity, and we’re proud to play our part in preserving this critical resource.”

“Through more than 2,800 continuous improvement (Kaizen) initiatives, we’re constantly seeking new ways to enhance efficiency and reduce waste, making sure that sustainability remains central to how we operate.”

“In recognition of these efforts, we’ve received five awards from institutional investors in the consumer discretionary sector. Our continuous push for innovation and environmental responsibility not only addresses today’s challenges but also positions Norman for a more sustainable future,” Rigby adds.

Ricky Richards offers “greenest” outdoor mesh

Sasha Afiouni from Ricky Richards says that in today’s world, sustainability is no longer just a buzzword—it’s a necessity.

“As businesses and consumers alike seek to reduce their environmental footprint, Ricky is proud to offer Outlook, the greenest outdoor mesh available, setting a new benchmark for eco-friendly performance in the market,” Afiouni says.

“The secret behind Outlook’s environmental advantage is Dow Ecolibrium bio-based plasticisers.”

“Outlook mesh incorporates Dow Ecolibrium, a revolutionary technology that replaces traditional petroleum-based plasticisers with bio-based alternatives.”

“This innovative approach reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 40%, creating a much lower carbon footprint than other outdoor fabrics.”

Afiouni says that this means that for every 10 square metres of Outlook fabric, the equivalent of one litre of petroleum is saved, making Outlook the best choice for those seeking both performance and environmental responsibility.

“Plasticisers are crucial in fabrics because they allow materials like Outlook to maintain flexibility and durability over time.”

“Traditional plasticisers are derived from petroleum, which contributes significantly to global emissions.”

Ricky Richards

“By using bio-based plasticisers, Outlook ensures that it not only delivers high-performance shading solutions but also helps lower the environmental impact of production. It’s a sustainable solution that still provides all the benefits customers expect, such as UV resistance, durability, and heat stability, while helping to preserve the environment.”

Afiouni adds that Outlook’s green credentials don’t come at the expense of quality.

“With up to 99% UV blockage, Outlook fabrics provide unparalleled protection from the sun’s harmful rays, making outdoor spaces more comfortable while helping to reduce the need for air conditioning indoors.”

“It’s a perfect synergy of sustainability and superior performance—keeping outdoor areas cooler and cutting down energy costs. Plus, Outlook is lead-free, phthalate-free, and Greenguard Gold Certified, ensuring low chemical emissions and contributing to healthier living spaces.”

“Choosing Outlook is not just about going green—it’s about investing in long-term durability. The mesh is easy to maintain and stands up to the toughest environmental conditions, including extreme weather.”
